Woe to the Plastic Bag - a poem
A poem by Maureen Dixon, recently published in the Tadcaster Methodist Church quarterly magazine.
Do you really need it?
Another plastic bag,
To stuff in drawer or cupboard,
They really are a drag.
OK! We need a few of them
For the rubbish in our bins;
But EIGHT or TEN each time we shop
For cakes and bread and tins?
The supermarkets now provide
Ones that we can reuse,
Many,many,many,times
So why should we refuse?
We could even buy some proper bags
They would not cost us dear,
But would safely hold our shopping
Not once, but year on year.
Some other countries seem to have
This matter well in hand;
So don't you think that it is time
For us to make a stand?
So next time that you go to shop
For a key ring,card or pin,
Do you really need that plastic bag
That they will put it in?
Just think very carefully
It does seem only fair
To those who live here after us;
To show them that we care.
Instead of filling up the tips,
Which makes the landfills groan;
These words should be upon our lips
A bag?
No thanks, I've brought my own.
