Have a Happy 'Green' Valentine

No sooner is Christmas behind us than Valentine's cards, chocolates and adverts for cosy dinners for two are in our high streets.

So how to show your loved one that you care - and that you are green and ethical? Well here are some suggestions from Green England.

Buy a native houseplant, garden shrub or tree for the garden rather than cut flowers flown in from abroad. Lasts much longer too.

Ensure the chocolates you buy are Fair Trade and organic. Some companies making chocolates have questionable ethics and poor environmental records. Choose Fair Trade.

Choose a gift or jewellery that is recycled or fair trade Look at the list below for gift ideas.

Cook dinner at home with local and organic ingredients Use beeswax or vegetable wax candles and accompany it with Fair Trade or organic wine.

Give a card that it is for charity or on recycled card

Forget Paris – enjoy England. Find a local beauty spot or city you haven't been to before you can visit by train.
