Clean Green and Save Money

Going green is sometimes regarded as expensive. It doesn't have to be. In fact when you go green with your cleaning you usually save money. There are a number of cleaning solutions that were better known to our Grandmothers than to the current generations that were efficient and cost effective as well as being eco-friendly. Some might seem a bit odd at first!

Take Bicarbonate of Soda. It has many uses around the house, can be bought from local stores and is environmentally friendly and cheap. A little on a damp cloth and you can clean your sink, bath hob and kitchen surfaces.

For the loo sprinkle Borax around the pan and leave for 30 minutes or overnight. For limescale use white wine vinegar.

For your laundry use soapnuts or ecoballs. Both work out far cheaper than washing powder.

For the windows - white wine vinegar mixed with 4 parts water.

For all your dusting needs take an ordinary duster, soak in approx 2 tablespoons of warm water and use for all your dusting needs. Collects the dust up rather than spreading into the air. For glass and tiles add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in addition. You can also add your favourite essential oil or lemon juice for fragrance. Tip contributed by Chris Hayward of Stop for Breath - seller of soapnuts.

If you are not keen on the DIY approach, there are many eco-friendly cleaning products. Search on the site for green cleaning products, soapnuts and ecoballs. Try just one change or product at a time. Use it over a few cleaning sessions to give yourself chance to get used to it and assess the results.
